It’s always been easy to overlook the contributions of stunt performers. While CGI has diluted the need for flesh and blood daredevils, the real thing is still valued. Especially for an old school action extravaganza like The Expendables 2. So it’s unfortunate that one of Hollywood’s movie soldiers paid the ultimate price.
Yesterday, one stuntman was killed and another injured during an explosion on the Bulgarian set of the big-budget sequel. Their names have not been released, although studio Nu Image/Millennium Films did issue a statement:
“It is with great regret that we confirm this unfortunate accident. Our hearts go out to the families and those on the production affected by this tragedy. The filmmakers are working closely with the authorities in responding to and investigating this accident.”
Such loss isn’t new, however. You may recall reading about a death on the set of The Dark Knight a few years ago – it’s the norm for such a profession. These guys sign up knowing they could take their last breath on camera. You’ve got to admire their guts.
And this comes after the release of a video detailing Tom Cruise’s death-defying aerial acrobatics down the side of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. Otherwise known as the tallest building in the world. You have to assume that he had far superior safety measures. Either that, or you have to be bat-shit insane to beat death. The scene from Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol certainly looks exciting, though. Yesterday’s events brings scenes of this nature into sharp focus… is it worth risking your life over a film?
