Ridley Scott’s Prometheus is the long-awaited prequel to his own Alien (1979). I just wish he’d come out and say it. For months now, we’ve sifted through rumours, heard conjecture from the studio and pored over a plot synopsis that could turn out to be phony. Whatever this film ends up being, it has my complete and undivided attention.
The venerable director spoke to Wall Street Journal and dropped a few new titbits. First, Ripley fans should prepare themselves for disappointment – Sigourney Weaver won’t be making a cameo appearance in the new film. Perfectly understandable considering the time-frame of the picture (even if it would be good to see ol’ Ellen one last time). He also mentions shooting the film in 3D and attempting to use practical effects wherever possible… comforting words for long-time fans of the series.
But the most interesting aside in the article is this: “The last eight minutes of the Prometheus story evolve into ‘a pretty good DNA of the Alien one’.” That might be the closest to a confirmation you’re going to hear for a while. Perhaps this is where the famous xenomorphs make their entrance? Or will we see a visit to a certain derelict ship on LV-426?
Prometheus stars Guy Pearce, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba and Michael Fassbender. Wake me up from cryo-sleep on June 8th 2012.
